WALK INFORMATION
A walk alongside the River Greta with award winning writer Keith Richardson, author of ‘The Greta’ and other Cumbrian-themed books ‘Ivver Sen’ ‘Joss’ and ‘Jack’s Yak.’
Twice outright winner of the Lakeland Book of the Year Award and also short listed for the prestigious Portico Prize for northern writers, Keith Richardson will take you on a guided walk exploring the beautiful River Greta which he describes as ‘the greatest little river in the world’.
The walk (from 12noon to 5pm) provides a unique opportunity to explore the environment of this amazing river, taking in the wildlife, its industrial past, and historic and literary associations with the Lakes poets, Robert Southey, William Wordsworth and the untamed Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Southey and Coleridge lived at Greta Hall high above the banks of the river in the 19th Century and the walk concludes with afternoon tea (from 4pm to 5pm) in the study of the house where the Lakes poets wrote and recited many of their great works.
The walk takes you alongside the river through the town and then along rough paths in Brundholme Woods to the Greta’s higher reaches. We return to the town and to Greta Hall via the old railway path that runs close to the river.
The walk will be in small groups of a maximum of 16 and a minimum of 7.
Walkers, who must wear sound walking boots and appropriate all-weather clothing. There will be a break by the river at a half way point so walkers can bring along a snack if they wish.
